    WINTERIZATION TIPS

Ten Tip for Water Safety at Your Home

    1. Protect Your Pipes
Ensure that exposed pipes, especially those in unheated areas like basements, attics, or crawl spaces, are adequately insulated. Foam insulation sleeves/wraps or electric heat tape can be used to cover pipes. Make sure your exterior crawl spaces are properly sealed; doors and other openings are closed or covered.
    2. Whole House Shut Off Valve
We suggest that you locate and label your home’s whole house shut off valve NOW, before an emergency water situation hits. We recommend shutting water off to yourhome by using your whole house shut off valve. Don’t rely on the meter shut off valve. Check your Hot Water Heater instructions to shut off, if needed.
    3. Seal Cracks and Gaps
Seal any cracks or gaps in walls, windows, doors, and foundations where cold air might enter and affect the pipes.
    4. Disconnect Garden Hoses/Yard Hydrants
Are your hoses disconnected from their outdoor hose bibs and yard hydrants? Disconnect any “splitter” too. The hose bib fixtures need to be fully drained, or they are subject to splitting under freezing conditions. It is also wise to coveroutside hose bibs with a foam insulating cover.
    5. Drain irrigation systems
Remove and drain all outdoor hoses. Drain your irrigation systems prior to onset of freezing temperatures.
    6. Keep Faucets Dripping
During extremely cold weather, allow a small steady drip of water to flow from the faucet furthest from your water meter inside your home. This will help prevent the pipes from freezing. Keep interior doors open to rooms with water pipes so heat can circulate well. Also keep under sink doors open.
    7. Unoccupied Properties have the highest risk for freezing pipe issues. About 30% of Eastsound Water’s residential services are seasonally occupied homes. The concern in unoccupied homes is that when a frozen pipe thaws and begins to leak, no one is there to notice the issue and a home can quickly flood.
    8. Sign up for Eye on Water and set up a leak detection alert. All Eastsound Water members have the ability to monitor their water use and activate a leak detection feature free of charge. Setting up a leak alert is EXTRA important if your home is empty for the winter. Visit Eastsoundwater.org and click on Eye on Water to learn more.
    9. Meter Box
Please make sure your meter box is insulated and accessible, free of debris such as stacked wood and parked cars. We have extra meter insulation at our office if need any.
    10. Contact your insurance Agent to see if you are coverage for broken pipes.

Bonus Tip: Stock up on salt, shovels, and emergency supplies before the first storm hits!
